How important is school sport in developing our young sportsmen and women. School sport must be seen as the bedrock of participation in provincial and national teams as well as the springboard to senior sport participation.

The Sports Legends Show featured two guests on Saturday 16 December 2023 who both contributed significantly to our sporting landscape in this city, province, nationally and internationally.

First, Janice Joseph, from Steenberg HS who represented SA at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games in athletics and especially the heptathlon. Very few females in SA participate in this discipline.

Second, Mr Cedric Van Wyk, also from Steenberg HS, who is a coach extra-ordinaire and has been forced to retire because of his age. He coached Janice and a number of other national stars from the Cape Flats.

It is important that we constantly remind our community of the importance of school sport and a mechanism to participate at other levels but also to travel. It allows individuals to later make a career out of sport. We also remind the community of the significant role that teachers play in nurturing talent on the Cape Flats.
