At least R12 million worth of coal which was illegally mined has been confiscated during a police take down operation in Carolina, Mpumalanga.

Sixty-million rands worth of mining equipment was also seized. It includes excavators, bulldozers and dump trucks.

The 53-year-old mine manager was arrested for the illegal mining activity.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says over the past twelve months, over 700 coal yards have been visited to ensure compliance. Just over 60 unregulated coal yards have been shut down for having no license.

Mpumalanga plays an integral part in South Africa’s electricity generation as the highveld region is home to 12 of Eskom’s 15 coal-fired power stations. The province also produces more than 80% of South Africa’s coal.
