Appropriate legislation needed for Muslim marriages

The past few weeks have once again brought the decades-long debate of the legalisation of Muslim marriages to the fore. Following a Constitutional Court ruling, government has been forced to put legislation in place to recognise Muslim unions – this extends to other aspects of Muslim Personal Law (MPL).

Proposals to include Muslim unions into the existing legislation has raised questions about whether government is trying to find a quick fix to a complex issue.
