At least ten government vehicles have either been damaged or destroyed in separate attacks in Cape Town over the past 24 hours as the taxi strike continues.
A municipal depot was petrol bombed in Delft on Saturday night. According to the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith seven vehicles belonging to different departments, including law enforcement, were affected.
Three vehicles were also torched in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.
In Atlantis, a taxi that tried to get away after spotting law enforcement was stopped after a chase. Tyres and arson implements were apparently found in the vehicle. Six suspects were arrested.
Smith says at least 110 criminal cases have been registered in relation to the taxi stay away.
He maintains that the taxi council, Santaco in the Western Cape must accept responsibility for the criminal acts as it should have anticipated that calling for the stay away would have resulted in chaos as witnessed during previous taxi strikes.
