In a new struggle reminiscent of what their ancestors endured during the apartheid years, residents of District 6 in Cape Town are facing evictions from their cottages in Searle Street, some of who’s family has lived there for almost a century.

The families received notices on the 29 June 2022 by a private owner based in Mpumalanga, saying that their leases with the previous property owners – the Holy Cross Sisters was cancelled. When they resisted, the new owner Etienne du Toit filed an eviction order.

One family has been living there since 1928, and another since 1938. Three others moved in during the 1970s.
