The Justice and Correctional Services Minister has failed to take responsibility for the massive breach in security at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.
Director of Action SA, Ian Cameron has questioned why there was never a point where Minister Ronald Lamola acknowledged the failures and announced measures to address them.
This follows the elaborate escape of murderer and rapist, Thabo Bester.
Cameron also lamented the financial losses incurred by taxpayers after R 1.4 million was spent on a flight from Tanzania to return Bester and his girlfriend back to South Africa.
Meanwhile… the second G4S security guard arrested in connection with Bester’s escape will remain behind bars until his next court appearance in May.
The 51-year-old Motanyane Masukela faces charges of assisting an inmate to escape from lawful custody and defeating the ends of justice.
He was arrested at the Mangaung Correctional Centre yesterday.
This is the same facility from which Bester had conducted his illegal business and escaped in May last year.
It’s understood that Masukela has some knowledge of Bester’s lies, including how he managed to dupe officials to help him escape.
Masukela’s case will now be added to the court roll with the other accused in the matter.
