The sun and the moon ˹travel˺ with precision.
The stars and the trees bow down ˹in submission˺.
As for the sky, He raised it ˹high˺, and set the balance ˹of justice˺
so that you do not defraud the scales.
Weigh with justice, and do not give short measure.
Ramadaan is a month of individual, community, and societal introspection. As Muslims seek to return to the Islamic balance presented in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, we reflect on our actions in the previous month and understand our impact on the natural and social environment.
Unfortunately, our human actions have increased extravagant lifestyles while poverty becomes more widespread, shopping lists designed for maximum processed convenience while ignoring the greater health impacts, agriculture suited for highest profit while wholesome produce is an alternative rather than the norm, the flow of clean water into sewerage pipes while nationwide droughts are counting droplets, the readiness for social media to promote while we struggle to reflect about ourselves and the world around us. We need to account for the consequences we have brought into our lives and others.
This month of Ramadaan 1444, Radio 786’s theme is “The preservation of the balance is a sign of faith”.
It is the preservation to a sustainable balanced way of life that will positively impact on our social, economic, political, and environmental reality. The conscious intention of looking after the blessed earth entrusted to us.
Surah Ar-Rahman (S55: V5-9) serves as the guiding verse of the balance created by Allah. Our choices and decisions have brought climate change and other social ills. It is up to us to move forward as a society to restore the balance through the teachings of the Holy Quran and from the greatest example, Nabi Muhammed (peace and blessings upon him).
