There will be no secret ballot on whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should face an impeachment process or not.

Lawmakers are set to vote Tuesday afternoon on the matter following the Section 89 report that found that the president has a case to answer for in the Phala Phala scandal. A large amount of US dollars believed to have been undeclared was stolen from his Limpopo farm.

In a letter Parliament’s speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula rejected the African Transformation Movement (ATM’s) request for a secret vote. She believes the atmosphere in parliament is not so toxic or highly charged that lawmakers will be prevented from exercising their vote in accordance with their conscience.

However, the ANC’s National Executive Committee has already resolved that its MPs must vote against the adoption of the Section 89 report. Ramaphosa’s camp believes the report is flawed.
