The manner in which racial tensions have been handled at Fish Hoek High School may have fueled the problem.

Director of the Free Speech Union of South Africa, Sara Gon, was speaking after a workshop facilitated by a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, had reportedly traumatised pupils.

The consultant, who was employed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), says that the workshop was structured to empower children to understand and embrace each other’s differences after an alleged racism incident occurred at the school.

The WCED has since suspended the workshop.

But Gon says that when racial tensions creep up in diverse groups, leaders, and in this case, teachers, should handle matters in a why that does not escalate the problem.

She says that this was not done in the Fish Hoek High School case.
