Amidst a deadly week in Cape Town, retired police officer, Brigadier Cas Goolam contends that each precinct must apply strategies specific to the dynamics of that region.

He was speaking as the Anti-Gang Unit has been deployed to Vrygrond following deadly clashes between taxi operators and gangsters.

Meanwhile, two known gangsters were shot and killed in Steenberg yesterday.

In response to concerns that communities may take matters into their own hands, Goolam contends that these formations should rather help the police.

He says that they run the risk of being infiltrated by gangsters.

Goolam alleges that this is what happened with the People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (PAGAD) in the 1990s.
