The wheels of justice will soon be turning for those behind the murder of Imam Abdullah Haron.

The anti-apartheid activist was killed on this day in 1969.

At the time, the Apartheid police claimed that Haron had fallen down a flight of stairs.

This was a claim often used to cover up the treatment of anti-apartheid activists in captivity.

An inquest into Haron’s death will be heard in November.

Member of the legal team, Odette Geldenhuys notes that the Ahmed Timol case had paved the way for the reopening of the inquests into apartheid-era crimes.

She says that up until that time, the National Prosecuting Authority had been slow to prosecute these cases.

Geldenhuys says that even though those allegedly behind Haron’s death have died, the family must be allowed to know the truth about his last moments.
