South Africa’s electricity crisis is complex but targeting the pockets of the public will not be the solution.

The public comment on Eskom’s proposed 38% tariff hike closes tomorrow afternoon.

CEO of Dear South Africa, Gideon Joubert says that there are major failures to address energy generation, and protect resources, but the public cannot afford these expenses.

Joubert notes that even municipalities are failing to absorb the impact of electricity prices from the public.

The tariff proposal includes the implementation of a 38% increase for next year, and 5% for the following financial year.

Eskom says that this will see the public providing R 335 billion in 2023, and R 365 billion for 2024.

This money is meant to cover operating costs; and depreciation amongst others.
