The agriculture sector is being excluded from addressing the country’s energy crisis.
AgriSA says that an Eskom imposed 1 MW limit placed on farmers producing electricity on their property is preventing them from creating more opportunities for energy sources.
The group’s chief economist, Kulani Siweya says that if this limit is lifted, farmers could generate more electricity which could feed back into the national grid.
He says that government has missed an opportunity.
Meanwhile…
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s energy plan has come in for criticism from the African People’s Convention (APC).
The party had been demonstrating outside Eskom’s power stations during the height of the load shedding last month.
APC leader, Themba Godi says that the plan presented by the president on Monday night is a realisation of their claim that Eskom is being deliberately mismanaged to make way for private generation of electricity.
Godi says that this plan, ironically allows Eskom to buy electricity instead of generating it.
This as President Ramaphosa announced that Independent Power Producers will come online, while Botswana will also provide South Africa with 580MW.
