The Department of Human Settlements has begun providing temporary housing to KwaZulu-Natal’s flood victims.

Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says that the government has already allocated funds to the construction of houses that had been damaged during the floods that ravaged the province.

There’s talk of land being made available to house informal settlement residents. All of these initiatives have been activated under the national state of disaster. But cast your minds back to the early days of the Covid-19 lockdown; similar promises were made. Then Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu pledged to release land to alleviate the congestion in informal settlements – what happened to those initiatives?
