A mentally ill man has been stoned to death in Pakistan.

This is the latest blasphemy-related act of violence to have hit the country in less than three months.

Pakistan’s Prime Minster’s special representative on religious harmony, Tahir Ashrafi says dozens of people have been arrested in connection with the attack that occurred last night in the Punjab province. It’s alleged that the victim had burned some pages of the Quran. Ashrafi condemned the violence saying this is not the religion of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

“Who could possibly justify the barbaric act of stoning to death a mentally ill person?” says Ashrafi. He was speaking during a televised press conference in Khanewal district, where the lynching happened.

“The man’s family say that he was mentally ill and his mental health wasn’t right for the past 10 to 15 years,” Ashrafi adds.

Islam is the most prominent religion in Pakistan, and even the slightest suggestion of blasphemy can supercharge protests and incite lynchings.
