Former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been given ten days in which to issue an unconditional apology for his 2020 utterances in support of Apartheid Israel. His appeal of the Judicial Conduct Committee’s ruling was dismissed.

The Judicial Conduct Appeals Committee confirmed that Moegeng breached the Judicial Code of Conduct when he involved himself in political controversy related to South Africa’s stance on Israel. Judges Dumisani Zondi and Nambitha Dambuza also found that Mogoeng violated the code for being involved in extra-judicial activities. They say it’s incompatible with the confidence in and the impartiality of judges.

A third member of the appeals committee, Judge Margaret Victor held a minority view saying she would have upheld Mogoeng’s appeal in its entirety.
