More teaching posts and classrooms are being made available in the Western Cape to accommodate new enrollments at schools for the next academic year.

Education MEC Debbie Schäfer says that learner placement has been ramped up, but that there are still 602 Grade 1s that have still not been allocated a school.

This as more than 3 261 Grade 8s are still waiting on where they will be placed.

It comes as the Western Cape has been struggling with a learner placement backlog that occurs every year.

The department says that this partly due to parents not agreeing to the school at which their children had been placed.

Schäfer says that there are  18 640 extra places being accommodated for the next academic year.

The department is also seeing to the refurbishment of classrooms, and rebuilding others.

This as new starter high schools have been created to accommodate new Grade 8 learners.

Schäfer says that 590 additional teaching posts have also been made available as of January 1.
