Those in Gauteng and other inland areas will need to pay more than R20 for a litre of petrol as of Wednesday.
The Energy Department announced a hefty fuel price hike with Cape Town motorists needing to fork out R19,63c/l of petrol. The cost of diesel will jump by around 74 c/l, Illuminating paraffin by 42c/l, and LPGas by R1,83c/kg. The department has attributed the high fuel price hikes to the sharp fall in the rand against the dollar.
The average oil price also increased over the period under review. These price hikes will hit the poor and working-class the severest as the prices of food and other basic necessities will shoot up.
