South Africa will not reach its 70 percent Covid-19 vaccination target for adults by the end of December.

The Health Department’s Acting Director-General Nicholas Crisp says the department had realized that the turnout at vaccine sites were declining, despite efforts to encourage people to get inoculated.

Vaccine sites in both the private and public sector has the capacity to vaccinate some 300 000 people a day nationally. In a bid to get more people vaccinated, pop-up vaccination sites have been set up at grocery stores, shopping malls and South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) pay points across the Western Cape.

According to the latest data, a fully vaccinated person was four times less likely to die of Covid-19 than an unvaccinated person.
