Facebook Shuts Down Its Facial Recognition System

Facebook says that it will shut down its facial recognition system and deleting scan data on its users. The company made the announcement as it’s been criticised for infringing on the public’s privacy.

The United States regulators are now working to enforce more checks on Facebook, which is notorious for rolling out invasive programmes, and apologizing later. Facebook’s policy change on facial recognition, will now shut down a feature that automatically identified people that appeared on users’ digital photos.

It essentially allowed Facebook to build up a database of people’s faces. Meta’s vice president of artificial intelligence, Jerome Pesenti, says that this move will see the deletion of more than a billion people’s individual facial recognition templates, and will take place over the coming weeks.
