Those that contribute to the informal economy in Cape Town often feel that they are left on the margins and not taken as seriously as traditional businesses.

A case in point is the continued harassment and confiscation of goods of informal traders by the City law enforcement officers during operations. They are also easily shoved to the wayside during major events in the city centre despite the financial role they play.

With the Covid-19 pandemic having shocked the health system – access to clinics have been limited. But there are growing calls for these sites to be better equipped to deal with mental health illness. These services would come in useful on the Cape Flats where people are left on their own to deal with the trauma of gang warfare and drug abuse.
