The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the deep realities of the extent of hunger not only in Cape Town but the rest of South Africa.

According to a survey conducted between September and November last year Gugulethu was found to have the highest prevalence of severely food insecure households – standing at 45%. It was followed by Khayelitsha’s 36%.

With Cape Town’s growing population – the water and sanitation networks are under pressure. For example, in Khayelitsha some residents have had to contend with sewage flowing into their roads and houses as the drains are blocked. Also, more residents are complaining about water trickling from their taps because of low water pressure.

We debate how the parties will ensure there is food security, better access to sanitation and tackle homelessness.
