The City of Cape Town is being slammed over a decision to allocate R48 million for a Formula E event.

The Movement for Collective Action and Racial Equity which is protesting outside City council says this is simply wrong. It notes that the money is being taken from much needed services for the poor to refurbish streets in an affluent area.

The Movement for CARE points that poor and working-class communities in townships are living with raw sewerage in their streets and informal settlements residents have no access to the most basic services such as water, toilets, and electricity.

The civil group says if there is no water, no toilets – then is no Formula E! It has vowed to put a stop to what calls this nonsense. It has demanded that Capetonians have a greater say in how the budget is spent.
