Minister of Cooperative Governance Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has been alerted to the IEC’s preferred date for the municipal elections to take place this year.
The Electoral Commission has briefed the public on its amended timetable to accommodate candidate nominations.
This after the Constitutional Court ruled last week that the polls must go ahead before November 1.
The IEC had asked it to postpone the elections to next year on the recommendation of the Moseneke Inquiry.
Meanwhile, Electoral Commission Chair, Glen Mashinini, says that the new deadline for candidate nominations will be set after the voter registration weekend of September 18 and 19.
This will also allow parties like the ANC, who claimed that they could not register all their candidates due to technical difficulties when making online submissions before the August 23 deadline, to make more.
