The public’s trust is close to being betrayed by the police service.

Principal Associate at Africa Centre for Security and Intelligence Praxis, Eldred de Klerk says that this is due to the police failing to implement the basics.

He was speaking as the Makhaza community in Khayelitsha still doesn’t have a police station. The land had been identified seven years ago and remains vacant.

De Klerk says that a police station takes between three to five years to be completed; this includes consultations and the tender process.

Khayelitsha’s size means that the police stations in Harare and Site B cannot service the entire area.

The latest crime statistics showed that Khayelitsha reported a more than 32 percent increase in violent crime.
