August 23 marks International Day for the Rememberance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This day was chosen because of the significant uprising by slaves at the time in Haiti.
The days August the 22nd and 23rd in 1791 saw the uprising that would play a vital role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade led by the European colonial powers.
This uprising inspired the Haitian revolution which was led by black mixed race people against colonial powers.
