More than 2.8 million South Africans lost their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic – many of which were highly skilled workers.

With South Africa’s youth constituting two-thirds of the population, the country’s workforce has lost valuable skills and assets that could have contributed to the improvement of the economy going forward.

An activist at the Assembly of the Unemployed, Siyabulela Mama, believes that in the face of South Africa’s unemployment crisis, it’s imperative that unused skills get put to work to develop a solidarity economy. What does he mean by that?
