August 9 is commemorated as Women’s Day in South Africa. Marking a turning a point in the struggle against Apartheid, women marched on the Apartheid president’s office at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to demand their dignity and rights.

But the role of women during the struggle was multi-faceted; from the activist to those who sacrificed, the woman who supported her activist husband and the one who single-handedly raised her children, women were the backbone of the struggle.
