South Africa has lambasted the African Union Commission’s decision to grant Zionist Israel observer status.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says that this decision comes in a year in which the violent oppressive nature of the Israeli regime on Palestinians had been highlighted.

Spokesperson, Clayson Monyela says that this unilateral decision has violated the basis of the AU Charter.

He says that the regime’s human rights violations make it incomprehensible that the AU Commission chooses to reward its behaviour.

The Zionist regime has been demanding this observer status for some time. It had the same status within the Organisation of African Unity until it was disbanded in 2002 and replaced by the AU.

South Africa will ask the AU Commission chair to provide a briefing to all member states on the decision.
