As of July 1, and in the midst of winter Cape Town residents will be paying 13% more for electricity. It comes following a High Court ruling that electricity provider, Eskom can go ahead with an above-inflation hike to secure R23 billion. The South African Faith Communities Environment Institute (Safcei) has condemned the increase saying it puts further strain on poor households. Cape Town residents will also be slapped with higher rates including paying more for water.
