South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown has been upgraded to alert level 4. President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced additional restrictions which he says will be reviewed after 14 days. It comes as the highly infectious Delta variant has been found in the country and as the economic hub, Gauteng sees a surge in new coronavirus cases.

From Monday, 28 June 2021 – Sunday, 11 July 2021:

• All gatherings including social and religious have been banned.
• Funerals and cremations will be allowed but attendance is limited to 50 people.
• Public spaces including parks and beaches will remain open but no gatherings are permitted.
• Curfew is from 9pm – 4am.
• Sale of alcohol for on and off site consumption is banned.
• Restaurants and other eateries will only be permitted to sell food for take-away or delivery.
• Travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure has been prohibited.
• Work remotely if you can.
• Schools will close from Wednesday, June 30 2021. The winter break has been brought earlier.
• Contact classes at tertiary institutions will end by Wednesday, June 30 2021, with limited access to the institutions. Residences will however remain open.
