The EFF has marched on to the headquarters of the health regulator Sahpra demanding that it give the green light for the emergency use of the Chinese and Russian made Covid-19 vaccines.

The party says it’s evident that government has dismally failed to provide vaccines to all citizens. It argues that this being enabled by Sahpra which it insists is refusing to authorise the use of Sinovac and Sputnik V.

Earlier this week Sahpra indicated that its evaluation of the vaccine Sinovac is at an advanced stage adding that its emergency use is being considered.

However, Sputnik V remains under review. Sahpra says a rolling review is being conducted which means that as data is submitted the health regulator does its checks.

To date Sahpra has only approved three Covid-19 vaccines – all manufactured in Western states. However, AstraZeneca had to be dropped due to the lack of effectiveness against the Covid-19 Beta variant.
