Sunflower oil and tomato prices are 30 percent higher than what it was last year. This is according to a new analysis by Statistics SA on certain food prices having skyrocketed over the past year.
The average price of a 750ml bottle of sunflower oil was R21 a year ago and spiked to R29, 39 in May 2021. The increase is attributed to the annual inflation rate of 5.2 percent in May, compared to 4.4 percent in April.
But the rising food prices are not just restricted to South Africa. Global food prices have also increased by its fastest monthly rate in more than a decade.
