At least eight people have been electrocuted during the Cape Town storm.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre says four people died in the Covid -19 informal settlement in Driftsands and another four – all children – lost their lives in the Klipfontein Mission Station informal settlement near Philippi.
In Somerset West a retirement village had to be evacuated and 170 people had to be relocated to a hall in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village.
Emergency teams also assisted with evacuations from Faure and Sandvlei in Macassar.
Flooding has affected close to 30 informal settlements. Disaster Management says assessments so far indicate that just under a thousand structures are impacted. Sand and milling are being provided to the affected communities, while humanitarian relief agencies assist with meals, blankets and other supplies.
Formal houses have also been flooded in several areas including Durbanville, Bo-Kaap, Schaapkraal, Bellville South, Belhar, Strand, Knorhoek, Scottsdene and Hout Bay.
Meanwhile, Lourens and Eerste Rivers have burst its banks. Spaanschemat River burst its bank onto the M42 opposite Tokai Forest. The sluice gate at Wemmershoek Dam near Franschhoek has been opened to mitigate downstream flooding
