4th Wave’s Curve Scrutinised by Scientists

The Covid-19 variants are changing sufficiently for people to be reinfected.

Deputy Director-General for the Health Department, Dr Nicholas Crisp, was speaking as the fourth wave makes its way through South Africa.

Gauteng, which is the first province to have entered the wave, is showing a decrease in infections.

Crisp says that scientists are encouraged by evidence that shows people who had contracted Covid-19 and were then vaccinated, showed a greater immunity against the virus.

But he has warned that people should not become complacent, especially as the Omicron variant appears to be less intense than its predecessors.

He says that there may come a stage when more people will have mild Covid-19 infections, and testing will become more convenient as well.
