A 25-year-old man accused of the rape and murder of a 93-year-old woman in Bellville will remain behind bars until his bail hearing next week.

Cynthea Doubell was found naked and dead on her bed last week by her neighbour. News24 previously reported that the resident who usually takes her coffee when she is sitting on her stoep went to go and check up on her when she found the pensioner’s body.

The accused made a brief appearance in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court today. Angered residents held a peaceful picket outside the court calling. They say the act of gender-based violence has sent shockwaves throughout the community.
